Rainbow Bridge Pet Sympathy Card

Dog Cat Card

This is my entry into the My Favorite Things Wednesday Sketch Challenge #499.

This is a card I hope I won't have to mail to a friend or family member any time soon. Unfortunately, the need for a pet sympathy card does arise from time to time and it always makes me sad when I have to make one. We lost our Bert a little over two years ago and I know how it feels to lose a furry member of the family. A small gesture like a handmade card lets the recipient  know you care and are there for them during this difficult time. I find it's better to make a few of these in advance because it's more difficult for me to make them immediately after the loss of a pet. I love the idea that our beloved pets go to the Rainbow Bridge when they are no longer with us. This sympathy card represents the pet crossing over to the Rainbow Bridge.

If you'd like to make this card too, keep reading for the instructions, as well as a full list of the supplies I used to create the card.

Let's Make This Card!

My Favorite Things Sketch Challenge

This is the sketch for the My Favorite Things Wednesday Sketch Challenge #499.

My Favorite Things Sun Rainbow Cloud Paw Dies

This was my process for designing the card. I found it very helpful to lay out the dies on a piece of 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" piece of white cardstock before I started cutting into my papers.

Lawn Fawn Stitched Rectangle Die

The first step is to die cut a base for the card. I used heavy white cardstock and a Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Rectangle die. A white background was used because the rainbow and sun are very colorful.

Darice Paw Print Embossing Folder

Since this is a pet sympathy card, I wanted to include paw prints on the card. I used a Park Lane Paw Print Embossing Folder to emboss the white background paper. It adds dimension and a pattern, but it doesn't overpower the rainbow and sun.

My Favorite Things Sun Die

Next, die cut a sun out of yellow cardstock. I used the Sunny Skies die from My Favorite Things.

Lawn Fawn Square Stitched Die

Next, die cut a square out of white cardstock. This square will become the sky background. I used a Lawn Fawn Small Stitched Square Stackables Die.

My Favorite Things Stitched Cloud Dies

Cut 2 clouds from white cardstock. I used the smallest cloud die from the My Favorite Things Stitched Cloud Die Set.

Sympathy Stamp Set

Use Memento Tuxedo Black ink to stamp "so sorry" onto one of the clouds. I used the Hero Arts So Sorry Stamp Set for the sentiment.

My Favorite Things Rainbow Die and Cardstock

Now it's time to cut the rainbow using the My Favorite Things Rainbow Whimsy Die. I used red, orange, yellow, green and blue cardstock from my stash to make the rainbow. Cut 3 of each color because they will be glued on top of each other to create a thicker rainbow.

My Favorite Things Rainbow Die

This is what the rainbow looks like after 3 layers of each color are glued on top of each other. You can't tell from the photo, but the rainbow is very thick.

My Favorite Things Paw Print Heart Die

Next, use the heart die from the My Favorite Things Paw Prints Die Set to cut a heart out of red cardstock. Cut a small black circle from black cardstock to back the paw. Glue the black circle to the back of the red heart.

Using Distress Oxide Ink And Stencil To Make Clouds

Use a blender brush, Distress Oxide Ink in tumbled glass and the Mini Cloud Edges Stencil from My Favorite Things to create the cloud background. This stencil is amazing! I love the fluffy blue clouds that were created by using it.

Paw Print Embossing and Clouds

After the blue ink is dry, attach the cloud background to the embossed piece using adhesive foam strips. Use the photo as a guide for the placement of the square.

Paw Print Embossing Rainbow and Clouds

Next, glue the rainbow on top of the cloud background.

So Sorry Sympathy Sentiment

Use adhesive foam dots to attach the sentiment cloud onto the bottom right side of the rainbow.

Sun Rainbow and Paw Print Heart

You are almost finished! Use the photo as a guide for the placement of the sun, cloud and heart. Attach the sun first using adhesive foam dots. Next glue the cloud to the rainbow and use adhesive foam dots to attach the heart to the cloud. Wrap black and white Baker's twine around the left side of the card and tie a bow to finish the card.
